Tips For New Fishing Boat Owners
If you’re new to the world of fishing from a boat, then you’re in for a great deal of enjoyment. Being on a fishing boat is a wholly different experience compared to fishing from a dock, since you can access deeper waters and potentially increase your catches. However, there are some things you need to do before you head out on your first fishing boat trip. We’ve outlined these tasks below.
Pack Necessary Items
Many a fishing trip has been waylaid by carelessness. If you don’t have extra line, hooks, and lures, what are you to do if a strong fish snaps your line in half? And if you don’t pack any food, how happy will you be when your stomach rumbles in the middle of the lake?
Make good use of the ample storage space on your fishing boat by loading it up with necessary fishing gear, including a well-stocked tackle box, a first-aid kit, sunscreen, bug spray, snacks, and plenty of drinking water.
Dress Accordingly
Whether you’re fishing in summer or winter, you need to be dressed for the weather. In hot weather, lightweight and light-colored fabrics are the best idea, since they’re breathable and won’t absorb heat from the sun. Long sleeves and pants might seem like too much on a 90°F day, but the extra fabric will actually help keep you cooler and protect you from sunburns. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield your eyes.
In the cold, layering up is the best way to go. Start with a base layer of wicking polyester or wool, then add lightweight sweaters and jeans or cargo pants before you top it off with your coat. Packing some extra sweaters and socks can be a lifesaver if you get drenched.
Follow Local Guidelines
Some fishing areas may require you to have certain permits or licenses ahead of time in order to legally fish there. Make sure you know what the laws are for the area you’ve chosen so you can comply with them and avoid a hefty fine. You should also be aware of any areas in a body of water that are off-limits so that you don’t disturb delicate ecosystems by cruising your boat through these areas.
